#Careerhack from one young professional

August 25, 2016

“Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.”  ― Stephen King

If his novels and movies didn't instil fear and panic into your minds, then the wise words of the Stephen King should do. How often do we see young sporting talents lose it all? The likes of gifted football, rugby or tennis players with brilliant capabilities fade away and never really hit the heights of success they expected.

The same goes for the world of finance, business, engineering, education, well, any industry or profession you are working in and striving to be the best at, the concept and expectation around talent is lost.

From one young professional to another, here are my #careerhacks for sustainable, achievable career success that require zero talent. They're so simple it's almost cheating!

Hard Work Ethic

A hard work ethic is the belief in the benefit and importance of hard work and its ability to strengthen character. Hard work ethic shows professionalism, dedication and integrity to your work, study or business.  Turning up to work with a positive can-do attitude and willingness to do what is required to get the job done without complaint is key.

Passion

Passion is the fuel the fuel for success, it’s self-driven and it comes from within. You should not shy away from showing great pleasure or joy in your work – it can be contagious and can have a positive impact on your employers, customers or clients. A simple way to show ‘passion’ (in a career context) is showing excitement over a new project or having a healthy obsession with your cause.

Next time a customer/client thanks you for helping them, reply “it’s my pleasure, I love what I do”. They will notice.

Doing Extra

Pay close attention to the mantra “under promise, over deliver”. It is a fool proof trait to forge a very credible and solid reputation. Starting work early and finishing late (within reason), approaching your work pro-actively with great initiative and taking on an additional project are all simple ways to show commitment by doing extra.

Being Coachable

The definition of being coachable is irrelevant. The key to being coachable is wanting to learn, grow and improve. Ask questions. Know what you don’t know. Be humble enough to let others guide you.

Being Prepared

To be prepared is to have a plan, be organised and have intent. The old adage “sweat in preparation so you do not bleed in battle” will always stand the test of time. Preparation is so often unseen but the key to performing well and achieving success. If you know you will be running a client or team meeting, be prepared, have an agenda ready to go so you and your meeting participants can align time and discussion expectations.

Success is likened to an iceberg for good reason. Often, we see the outcomes and accomplishments of others around us, but what we don’t see or if often hidden, is the efforts and actions taken to get there. Don’t hold yourself back, make many small efforts and they will have a large impact.

Don't be like this guy
